That’s not a typo. And I’m not talking about science fiction, either!
I just came across very recent research that could truly make “liposuction” in a bottle possible a lot sooner than we think.
Let me explain…
Typically, fat loss drugs try to get you to lose weight by suppressing your appetite (so you eat less), by blocking fat absorption (so your body gets less calories overall) or by boosting your metabolism (so you BURN more calories, even while at rest).
What scientists at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Centre have done is almost unbelievable.
They’ve developed an experimental drug that targets only fat cells – and kills ‘em!
“Development of this compound for human use would provide a non-surgical way to actually reduce accumulated white fat,” said Renata Pasqualini, one of the researchers working on the drug.
The drug is called Adipotide. The study, done on obese rhesus monkeys, was published in the November 2011 issue of Science Translational Medicine.
The researchers gave ten obese monkeys the drug for a period of four weeks. At the end of the study, the monkeys had lost a whopping 38.7% of their total body fat! The control group only lost 14.8%.
Better yet, of the fat lost, a large portion of it came from the abdominal area. The monkeys in the experimental drug group lost 27% of their abdominal fat over the course of the four weeks.
With the success of this trial on a monkey model, the researchers are now planning a clinical trial on obese human subjects.
Patients in this new study will receive the drug daily, for four weeks as well.
Only time will tell what will happen. But if it is successful, that will surely mean a HUGE breakthrough in obesity research.
Think about it: Being able to target only “bad” fat cells… and making them go away without any surgery or discomfort. That’s unheard of!
If this human trial is successful, who knows how soon we’ll be seeing bottles that can truly deliver on the promise of “melting” fat off of your body.
However, there will never be a substitute for a balanced and healthy lifestyle that means you’ve got to eat right, strength train, and add cardiovascular exercise as needed. If you know me, then you’ll know how passionate I am about nutrition and just how important it is in your weight loss journey.
And if you want a little extra “assistance” with your weight loss efforts, I recommend you increase your fibre intake.
It will help you stay fuller, longer -reducing the possibility that you’ll overeat. And, it’ll prevent any big spikes in insulin or blood sugar when you include it in your meals.
