$100,000 For Saying Two Words!

Bruce Buffer has one of the most recognisable voices in the world and is reported to get paid as much as $100,000 for saying just two words.  Hard to believe and you can imagine how incredible it was to meet Bruce and have him record this video for me last year when I was in Los Angeles.  Thank you, Bruce, you are a legend!!  Special thanks to JT Foxx for making it happen.
Bruce is the official octagon announcer for the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) events and has established the catchphrase “IT’S TIME!”, which he announces before the main event of the UFC. I enjoyed listening to Bruce talk about his half-brother Michael Buffer who is the boxing and wrestling ring announcer who has become worth $400m by uttering the catchphrase “Let’s get ready to rumble.” Bruce talked about being a “working ambassador for your brand” and how he and his brother created a range of products such as key rings, mugs, video games, movie appearances and talking toys to dramatically grow Michael’s brand.

What many people don’t know about Bruce is that he has a background in martial arts and is meticulous when it comes to his nutrition and exercise.  In fact, Bruce believes that “staying healthy is 75% nutrition and 25% exercise.” He is a strong advocate of sustainable health and treating your body like a “fine-tuned machine and temple.” You can’t expect to put “crap” into your body and get a first-class high-performance outcome.  Even though you may be forgiven for thinking Bruce’s job is just pumping up the audience and saying a few words, but when you want to be the best at what you do, you must ensure that you maximise your energy and health. Bruce undertakes a lot of travel and his days at UFC events can be very long, “I need to be ready to go at a moment notice, so I need to ensure my mind and body are ready to go at all times-as well as my voice.”

I think Bruce is a great example of someone who has embraced a “life” of health and fitness in a sustainable manner. Bruce can be seen working out regularly at the iconic Gold’s Gym in Venice, California optimising his strength and conditioning training. Despite Bruce’s hectic schedule, he ensures that he pays attention to his nutrition and always being prepared. A typical day for Bruce comprises;

  • Eating every 3 to 4 hours having 5 meals per day
  • Focusing on small meals more frequently, as portion control is key to Bruce
  • Bruce loves his egg white, vegetable omelettes, oatmeal and coffee for breakfast
  • A 2-hour workout of strength, cardio and stretching following breakfast
  • Post workout protein shake with blueberries
  • Protein bars as snacks throughout the day
  • Bruce consumes all his carbs before 6pm as he won’t be burning them off after that time. Mainly protein and vegies for dinner without the high energy carbs such as rice, pasta, bread, etc.

On the day of a UFC event Bruce finds that he lives off the protein bars and a modified wholemeal club sandwich at the motel as he likes to “carb up” before a show so that he has plenty of energy. He steers clear of energy drinks, with the exception if he is playing in a poker tournament and needs a “pick me up.” He does use throat lozenges from time to time to help his voice if he is suffering from a sore throat, but ensures he’s resting his voice the night before a UFC event.

I love the focus Bruce has on his nutrition “…thing is to eat every 3 to 4 hours so that you can speed up your metabolism”, he agrees that eating big meals is not the way to sustain your body and insists on eating throughout the day for sustained energy.

A privilege to gain an insight into your health and fitness Bruce, thank you.
